Making groceries…again

Yesterday, I had to go make groceries. People who live in the Gulf of Mexico region (Louisiana in particular) know and use this phrase and that’s where I learned it. The rest of the country might not know that “making groceries” means to go get groceries. I believe that it is an evolved translation of the French faire les courses, in which the word faire means, to make or do. But let me not diverge into linguistics, which happens to be one of my other favorite topics. The point of this post is to share my personal experience with rising grocery prices.

If you have been following my posts, you know that I emphasize healthy, homemade and home-grown foods. I don’t have chickens or other animals so when it comes to animal protein, I have to shop for it.

Years ago, my family ended our relationship with ground beef and we began eating ground turkey, a reasonably acceptable substitute with less saturated fat. We later found the non-antibiotic version of the Jennie-O brand and have been buying it since then and until now—at least until I find a better price!

Below is the evolution of prices between April 2025 and January 2026. In just over 8 months the price for this item increased 23.5%. That outpaced the Consumer Price Index which was calculated as 2.7% .

So other than the product I buy, how does 2024 compare to 2025 for shoppers in general? Well, unless you haven’t purchased anything in the past 24 months, you know that prices have increased. This is the data.

Shopping around has become a fact of life and fortunately, it is made easier by the mobile apps stores have (or Facebook pages). I am intentional about minimizing the greenhouse gases emitted from my personal vehicle, so I shop once each week and I make as few stops as possible. Stay green!

p.s. I did find the turkey from another store with a price about 1/3 lower than my usual store. Shop around and while you’re at it, shop at ColorBlindWork | People. Plants. Purpose. for herb plants to pair with your ground turkey and other foods!
