Trade wars blowin’ up prices

I am not an economist but I learned back in Economics 100 (won’t say how long ago that was) that tariffs harmed both parties participating in a trade war. It is baffling that the mission to do harm to Americans has expanded to policies that eliminate or reduce healthcare, food access, housing support, education, freedom of speech and voting rights—and also the tariffs that are biting us in our wallets.

As a greenhouse plant business, we have to purchase soil, amendments, containers, lighting and other equipment. The tariffs imposed since January 2025 have increased prices on many goods. One of those items is the 5-pack of nursery pots shown below. In 2024 this item was priced at $61.47 + tax at a DIY store. (That’s actually pretty high but we paid a premium to get these items quicker). In 2025, those containers are now $78.82 + tax at the same DIY store. That is a 28.22% price increase!

ColorBlindWork | People. Plants. Purpose. is a small business so we can work around purchasing new containers by using old containers, and rummaging for discarded containers at that same DIY store mentioned above! Larger scale businesses that aren’t as flexible are absorbing those price increases, and then passing them on to consumers. Yes, we all pay more. That is economics.

I did a quick fact check about the first round of the current administrator in office. The tariffs imposed at that time severely harmed the farming industry. Which begs the question, why did those farmers, who suffered financial losses back then (and who are once again on the losing end of tariffs) vote a second time (maybe third) for the same results? I am also not a psychologist but it is remarkable that the desire to do harm to others blinds one to the harm that has been done to him/her/them.

ColorBlindWork | People. Plants. Purpose. chooses to support, assist and teach, and not do harm to others. We value good health, nutritious foods, exercise and equitable access. We are definitely #woke (a term created by Black people for Black people) because we believe that being anti-woke is to love ignorance and to hate books.
